One bipolar morning everyday

What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

Those who know me, know that I am an early riser. I wake up at 5.30/6 to the singing of the blackbirds, and try to enjoy the moment for some time before getting up and going downstairs.

My cat is always waiting for me and I first attend to him, giving him his breakfast.

I then put my coffee machine on, and do my daily exercise which takes only ten minutes in total, but became an essential part of my routine. I think it keeps me fit.

My coffee is ready by the time I finish and feeling good about the fact that I am done with the most difficult part of my morning routine, I poor myself a large cup of nice coffee, and start checking the news and X. I love posting on X, and therefore, usually I have some responses to my posts, and I reply to them, which is perhaps my favorite activity in the morning. I like it when people read me. Maybe it’s because I am a writer, and want to publish my books.

I enjoy my coffee for good half an hour, and then eat my yogurt, and take my medication. I eat the same yogurt for a couple of years now. I like the routine, and it always comforts me, when I don’t have to rush anywhere, and can enjoy a few moments in peace.

I also try to write for my manuscript (a memoir about my bipolar disorder), and at 7.30 I wake my son up for school. I bring him a fresh orange juice and a biscuit and try to write a bit more while he is getting ready.

At 8.30, once my son leaves for school, I usually start working, as I am the most productive in the morning, and it’s my favorite part of the day.

Doing the exact same thing in the morning is good for my mental health. With the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, I realised at some point that a rigorous routine is that keeps me stable. I go to bed at ten, wake up early, sometimes have a short nap during the day. We eat fish and chips on Tuesday and order Domino’s pizzas on Wednesday, to give me a break from cooking, as I cook almost every day.

And life is good when I wake up at 5.30/6 in the morning and know that I will do the exact same thing over and over again, keeping me sane and in a good mood.

I do have luxury mornings, and with my bipolar disorder, it helps. No rush, no stress, the beautiful familiarity of the same routine, where life is amazing, thanks to joy from very simple things. Good coffee, nice yogurt, the possibility to listen to the birds, and write.

I love my mornings.

  1. Your cat waits for you to give him breakfast?! Lucky!!!

My cat climbs on top of me while I’m still trying to sleep and harasses me into submission!!

    1. He can’t go to my bedroom at night or early morning, he has to wait. Thankfully for him, I wake very early: usually around 6 in the morning.

      1. That helps a lot!!! I sleep in a loft so I have no barrier to protect me from bullying felines!!!

      2. Sleep is my main trigger. I need to sleep and my cat, Luni shows total disrespect towards my condition and randomly wonders at night from one bedroom to another, talking.
So, he is no longer allowed to go to bedrooms at night.
        🤣

      3. Oh yes! Cats can be very rude and completely without regard for the needs of others!

Actually, I’m pretty sure this is just phenomenon peculiar to urban/suburban cats though. Rural cats raised with total in-and-out privilege at all hours are incredibly well-mannered!

      4. Yes, some of them are spoiled more than others.
Mine feels entitled and lives a very privileged life😂

      5. I have an old cat who is enjoying an idyllic country retirement free from the competition of any other pets, with two meals of paté each day and round the clock in-and-out privileges, after a long and pampered condo life. And he still finds something to complain about every hour or so 🤦🏻‍♂️

      6. Ha ha ha!
        Mine too!

    2. I am reading your post on your blog now!
I feel really flattered you mention my name🤗

      1. Aw! I appreciate you so much!!!

I finally got to read Elena in Spain!!! It was wonderful! I will write more when I have an opportunity! ☺️

      2. Thanks!
I unpublished it for the time being.
I want a traditional, well-established publisher for my books.
I learned to accept the fact that maybe I am not a good writer🥲

      3. Aw! I think you have a great story to tell! And just trying to respond to this I can see that I have way more feedback for a comment!

Writing in another language is a whole unique challenge in and of itself. Unfortunately, that is impossible for a lot of people to appreciate if they haven’t had to do it themselves.

First of all, you did it! That’s far and away the most important thing. I admire you tremendously for that point alone. I have wanted to write a fiction novel MY ENTIRE LIFE. And I haven’t. So right off the bat you are a far better fiction novelist than I am!

It’s unfortunate how easy it is to criticize the work of someone else in a discipline one has never personally attempted.

I think all you really need is a good editor. The story is really wonderful! And that’s the most important thing! I think the rest is really just details that can be worked out.

I can tell you that it could use more dialogue (something I struggle with myself). And it could use more visual descriptions (something else I have trouble with).

I have a bunch of other thoughts that I should sort out as well if you are interested. If you had any thoughts of revisiting and revising it at all, I think you have a lot of options for developing it further!

But as it is, I found it wonderful and moving and I am very glad that I had the opportunity to experience it! Thank you SOOO much for sharing it with me!

      4. Yes, all advice is very welcome in regards to that book!
I agree: it needs an editor and expansion and more visuals.
Thank you for having read it!
        🤗

      5. Let’s talk more about it when we have more time! ☺️

      6. Thanks!

  2. You’ve crafted a wonderful routine that brings you comfort and joy. Taking the time to appreciate the simple pleasures can make a big difference, especially when dealing with something like bipolar disorder.
    Keep cherishing those peaceful moments!

    1. Thank you for stopping by on my blog!
I have been really busy at work and couldn’t read all of your posts!

About Me

I am a doctor of philosophy, a university lecturer, and a lover of cats, fine wine, dancing, theatre, and human eccentricity. I was born in the Soviet Union (Moscow). I am fluent in four languages, and have spent all my adult life studying (except from 18 to 19) working and living throughout Western Europe. Despite a surname-Netchitailova- that translates from Russian into English as “unreadable”, my greatest passions in life are reading and writing. My personal struggles have made me appreciate the manifestations of weirdness that exist everywhere.
